Everything about ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’ and its link with Avengers
Ant-Man and the Wasp is the second movie of the Antman series. When Avengers and the Infinity War got released, everyone was so speculative about where Antman was. He wasn’t shown in the movie and apparently, he has to be in the movie by the sources. So, in order to meet the questions as well as linking him with the Avengers next part; the Ant-Man and the Wasp is displayed as a plot that happened just after the Civil War and before the Infinity War. Apart from these things, the movie has got a lot of new elements including the immaculate cameo of Stan Lee. I know, calm your horses down. The movie has a lot of other interesting things like the entire staging of Quantum Realm and Phasing, which comes out to be intriguing elements for the discovery.
Coming to the plot of the movie, it is based on the hunt of Janet Van Dyne, the mother of Hope Van Dyne. Michelle Pfeiffer, who is playing the mother of Hope in the movie has been lost for 30 years in the Quantum Realm, after going into a subatomic size. The movie starts with Janet and Hank, trying to stop a missile attack. She takes a risk for Hank and goes subatomic in order to dissonate the bomb. Gone for 30 years, she was believed to be dead until Scott Lang returns to the normal state from the realm on his own, in the first movie of the series. As a result, Hope and Hank together devise a plan in order to bring Janet from that corner of the universe by building a device which acts as a tunnel from our universe into the Quantum realm by turning us into subatomic particles.
What exactly is Quantum Realm?
Quantum Realm is a place where space and time work in an entirely different way. It is known that the realm has the potential to keep the entire universe fresh given how quantum physics, as quoted in the film is the future of science. It goes beyond the Nanotechnology, the Artificial Intelligence, and the Virtual Reality that our Tony Stark is involved with. Additionally, rumors have that the universe will soon have characters like the Fantastic Four, hidden in the realm. Janet, in the movie, is shown to have untold powers that might be explored either in the third Ant-Man movie or the Avengers next part. As the journey for Janet goes on, we are also introduced to the new phenomenon of ‘Phasing’ through a character, named Ava. Phasing accordingly is a state where the molecules in a body are torn apart and are again stitched together over and over and over, on being exposed to high levels of energy.
While the movie revolves around the same it is after the post-credits scene we see that Scott gets stranded in the Realm in order to collect some Quantum healing power from the realm. Hope along with Hank and Janet are shown to disappear because of the Thano’s snap-in Avengers: Infinity War. So, Scott is now on his own and somehow should be far from the time vortex in has to come out of the realm in order to be in Avengers 4.
Where did Quantum Realm come from?
The first appearance of Quantum Realm happened back in 1963. It is revealed in Fantastic Four No. 16, titled as ‘The Micro World of Doctor Doom’. Doctor Doom shrunk himself into the subatomic world for six months and then comes back. He reveals that he has found a peaceful happy world, the one which is later freed by Hank Pym and the Fantastic Four. It is still not known where Doctor Doom is, or if he’s alive or dead. However, the film series has a new Antman Scott Lang in the picture, but the purview of the subatomic realm remained the same. We can see the Quantum Realm again in the Fantastic Four comic Annual 5, where a villain is introduced from the clustered Sub-Atomica worlds. He says he wants to invade the regular world in order to deal with the overpopulation.
“I am so small that you could never see me — could never harm me.”
Defeated, we only see its appearance again after a year in the Fantastic Four No.75 again. However, things got interesting about Quantum Realm when Hulk visited it in 1971. In the Incredible Hulk No.140, Hulk gets shrunk to the sub-atomic level by a villain. This comic, written by Harlan Ellison shows us that Hulk is actually ended up in a strange place inside the inner space where he finds a princess there. He is shown to revisit this world few times, but Quantum Realm did not really be a thing until the Ant-Man came into the picture.
So coming back to the picture, what part could Ant-Man be playing in the Avengers 4 given he’s struck in the Quantum Realm? The Avengers 4 is going to be released next year, which tells us that there’s a lot of time in between both of the Avengers. As mentioned earlier, the mid-credits scene of the Ant-Man and the Wasp is tied to the Avengers Infinity War where Hank Pym, Hope, and Janet disappear at Thanos’ snap. This puts Scott Lang in a nightmare where he gets stuck in the Quantum Realm. The promotions of the upcoming Avengers have already been teasing us about his appearance in Avengers 4.
In the second movie of the Ant-Man, Janet who spent years in the Quantum Realm asks Scott to stay away from the time vortex, a reality where the concepts of both space and time become completely irrelevant. She also mentions that the Quantum Realm has given her some kind of healing power which changed her. Spiros Michalakis, a famous Quantum Physicist and also one of the consultants of Marvel has been interviewed about the concept of Quantum Realm. According to him, all the physical laws that are applicable in this universe including gravity, light, space and time are completely irrelevant when you shrink yourselves down.
“If Ant-Man can shrink down to the smallest of the small, he will enter this nothing, this non-reality. All of time and space will be open to him. He could literally change the universe around him Dr. Manhattan-style. And he could traverse time at will.”
The key is the Time Vortexes:
The mid-credits scene was actually horrifying than we can imagine given the witty attitude of Scott Lang, played by Paul Rudd. When Thanos has finally snapped his fingers in Wakanda, Hank and his family has disappeared thus Scott Lang getting stranded in the Realm. There wasn’t anyone who can bring Scott back to the normal world. Given all of these theories, it is clear that the Time Vortexes will be the key to the Ant-Man being a part of Avengers 4. According to the information given by Janet, Quantum Realm is a fractal reality which is highly unstable. The two warnings that Janet gives him before he goes into sub-atomic phase include “Don’t get sucked into a time vortex. We won’t be able to save you.” and “Stay out of the Tardigrades”.
In real terms, a Time Vortex is nothing but a passage that works on the theory of relativity. According to Einstein, the motion of the planets is twisted with time and space around them in the space and has the possibility of creating a vortex. The Sci-Fi takes this step to another level and has established the time vortexes through which one can travel through space and time. These Time Vortexes are previously found in Doctor Who, where the Tardis travels through these vortexes which are nothing but wormholes with immense gravitational interferences. Therefore, Scott Lang is supposed to enter into the vortex and can be transported to any place in the universe and as well travel in the time as well, in normal size. While this idea is extremely dangerous given how Janet has already warned her, Scott Lang is going to face major consequences which would put him in trouble. However, it is only understandable that our hero who is desperate at times will go to any extent in order to escape. As clumsy as he is, he will definitely get caught in the vortex if not voluntarily, by accident at least.
Time – Jump between Avengers Infinity War and Avengers 4:
There have been rumors between there is a large jump between the Avengers 3 and the Avengers 4. These rumors are being reinforced when Emma Fuhrmann, the 16-year-old has been cast as Cassie, Scott Lang’s daughter in Avengers 4. However, it is also possible that Scott is traveling in time and therefore, gets to meet the future versions of people given we have seen the white-haired Robert Downey in the shoot. Whatever time Scott goes to, the first thing he would do is to meet his daughter and this obvious casting proves that he’s going to time travel through the vortex. It is said that Scott Lang will appear after six years from the snap in a different universe where situations are changed dramatically. The aftermath of the Thanos’ snap is known to create a chaos on the universal level where we are shown aircrafts dropping from the sky, with pilots disappearing from the seats. The world leaders are vanishing from the negotiations and the emergency services are left in the middle. However, the promotional pictures of the Avengers have taken the game to a different level where hope is the left as the only thing which brings peace to the mad world.
Cassie has assumed that Scott has been another victim for the snap, given his disappearance. It is also possible that she can become a superhero on his own, wearing the Ant-suit in order to honor his memory. If things go according to the comics, it is only valid that her being a superhero would be an introduction to the concept of Young Avengers. However, her father’s return will shock her amusingly and his joining the Avengers will be inevitable. While in the Avengers Infinity War, we see that Doctor Strange has given the time stone in order to save Iron Man’s life after going through the probabilities of winning against Thanos. Therefore, Tony Stark will soon know about the time vortexes and he will work about traveling in time in order to avert the Thanos’ snap. The return of Ant-Man would also change the history of the Avengers. In the 1994 comics, Apocalypse of Marvel’s Age; a time-traveler is found in the dystopian reality where he rules the Apocalypse. It is still not known who this time traveler is, but given the circumstances; it is highly probable that he is Ant-Man.
Doctor Strange’s vision about Ant-Man:
With Ant-man being able to travel in time and space, things get added to Doctor Strange’s decision where he has handed over the Time Stone on Titan to the Big Bad villain. Before crumbling to dust, Strange has told Tony Stark that this is the only way in which they can kill Thanos. He implies that a series of events take place where Thanos get defeated ultimately and has manipulated the events so that Ant-Man is struck in the Quantum Realm in the exact time. This is the only way out of millions of possibilities where Thanos can be defeated and Tony Stark is going to play an important role in this possibility.
However, it is also possible that Doctor Strange has prolonged the battle by foreseeing the possibilities so that the Ant-Man can enter the Quantum Realm at the exact moment where Hank, Hope, and Janet would disappear. If this is the case, the two important people who can make things happen for Thanos’ defeat: Tony Stark and Ant-Man. While Ant-Man is responsible for time travel, Tony Stark would be the one who would meddle with the travel technology. Hulk, on the other hand, would also play a big role given he did not do much in the Avengers: Infinity War.
